Ten winners, track champions crowned at Mason City Motor Speedway

August 30, 2020

Josh Angst won the first USRA Modified main event and captured the 2020 track championship at the Mason City Motor Speedway.

Josh Angst won the first USRA Modified main event and captured the 2020 track championship at the Mason City Motor Speedway.

The Mason City Motor Speedway hosted Season Championships on Sunday night with twin features in all five Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series divisions.

Trailing Jason Cummins by a mere five points entering the finale for the USRA Modifieds, Josh Angst of Winona, Minn., raced to victory in the first feature race while Cummins, of New Richland, Minn., had to settle for fifth after starting ninth on the grid.

That put Angst ahead by nine points heading into the second contest. Finishing 10th and 12th, respectively, neither driver could make a move and Angst wound up with the title with 11 markers to spare.

Lucas Schott of Chatfield, Minn., who finished third in the opening 20-lapper after starting 10th, rebounded in the second and scored the win despite starting 13th.

Devon Havlik, Austin Wolf and Cummins rounded out the top five in the first feature while Brett Bumgardner, Aaron Benson, Ben Kraus and Al Hejna completed the top five in the second race. Kraus, Havlik and Hejna wound up third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the final standings behind Angst and Cummins.

In the American Racer USRA Stock Cars, Andrew Borchardt of Plymouth came into the night with a healthy lead in the points but left nothing to chance as he seized the victory in the first of two main events for the class.

National title contender Doug Keller towed from Easton, Mo., and took runner-up honors in the first race with Chanse Hollatz, Mike Blowers and Darrin Korthals rounding out the top five. Derek Green of Granada, Minn., won the second feature with Clear Lake’s Hollatz second, Borchardt third, Blowers fourth again and Korthals repeating his fifth-place effort.

Borchardt bested Blake Adams of McIntire by 61 points for the track championship. Third through fifth in the final tally were Coy Van Hauen, Wyatt Medlin and Joe Schmit.

Brandon Hare’s fifth-place finish in the first of two USRA B-Mod main events turned out to be enough to capture the 2020 track championship. The former two-time Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national champ from Elma had pressure from Waterloo’s Brandon Maitland, who finished 24 points behind Hare despite a victory and fifth-place effort in Sunday’s twin 20-lappers.

Josh Appel of Mason City finished second in the first feature race followed by Shaun Walski, Nate Whitehurst and Hare. The second race went to polesitter Jared Boumeester followed by Ty Griffith of Webster City, Levi Chipp, Nate Albrant and Maitland, who took the green flag from the 17th starting spot.

Doug McCollough wound up third in the final rankings for the USRA B-Mods. George Nordman was fourth and fifth went to Tianna Mithun.

It was a ‘hat trick’ for Cresco’s Chris Hovden Sunday night. The 2009 Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stock national champion was the only driver to capture both of his division’s feature races—and it was an effort that sealed the track championship.

In the first feature, Hovden beat Edgewood’s Dylan Clinton, Scott Dobel, Zac Smith and Derek Willert to the finish line. Dobel and Smith were second and third in the second contest with Kyle Sidles fourth and Willert earning another fifth-place paycheck.

Hovden’s final margin of victory in the points battle was 32 over Dobel. Willert, Smith and Austin Hoeft rounded out the top five.

Bobby Blowers of Waseca, Minn., won the first of two USRA Tuner main events with Jeremiah Anderson of La Crosse, Wis., crossing the finish line second ahead of John Gill, Devin Jones and Chris Wilson.

The second 10-lap battle went to Jones, who started eighth on the grid. Ryan Bryant of Mason City settled for second with Oliver Monson third, Max Heimbuch fourth and Gill fifth.

Bryant was able to hold off Gill for the track points title. Jones wound up third with Heimbuch fourth and Jade Lange fifth.

Sunday’s show saw the Outlaw Mini Mods join the program with Mason City’s Micheal Bryant getting the win. Nathan Kilwine of Glenville, Minn., was second followed by Logan Brown of Clear Lake, Scott Johnson of Owatonna, Minn., and Kamdyn Haggard of Humboldt.

Brown wore the points crown over Haggard, Bryant, Kilwine and Alexander Kenward.

While the points battles have come to an end, the 2020 racing season at the North Iowa Events Center has not. On Sunday, Sept. 20, the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge bult by Medieval Chassis rolls into the Action Track featuring American USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods, with Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Mini Mods also on the card.

The Mason City Motor Speedway is a 1/3-mile clay oval located 5.1 miles east of I-35 at exit 194 on SR 122 (at the North Iowa Fairgrounds).
